Removing Proxy Server From Ubuntu 9.04

I am using proxy server at work but when i got home i have to use direct connection and proxy is a issue at ubuntu if you are using windows proxy.If you have situation like this(Failed to fetch http://tr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/jaunty-updates/multiverse/i18n/Translation-en_US.bz2  Could not connect to 127.0.0.1:5865 (127.0.0.1). – connect (111 Connection refused)) and you want to remove proxy server completely you may want to do the following steps.

1. Go to System->Preferences->Network Proxy then unset the proxy server you are using and make it to apply system wide.
2. Go to System->Administration->Synaptic->Settings->Remove the proxy server there too.

You may want to try update your packages right now before goes into last step if can not update problem still exist.

sudo apt-get update

set | grep -i

proxy if you see as a result of this command like http_proxy=yourdomainname run the last command

unset http_proxy

This will remove the proxy on your machine.You can update your packages now.

sudo apt-get update

Yoxos On Demand: Create Your Own Eclipse Installation

I wrote a article about how to install eclipse on ubuntu machines but it sometimes painfull to install from repositories.You can reach article from here . But Kubilay Onur Güngör commented a yoxos system that you can create your own eclipse installation by choosing packages for your eclipse.And also you can download other people’s created eclipse installations by searching profiles tab.I think it is a good project for eclipse community instead of searching packages and try to install and it comes with yoxos update system which is better than the default eclipse update system.

Installing Eclipse Ubuntu 9.04

Installing Eclipse in Ubuntu is very easy procedure but sometimes openJDK generate some unexpected problem.So instead of using openJDK you can download sunJDK.Here are the steps that help you to install eclipse in ubuntu linux.

1. sudo apt-get install eclipse (install eclipse ide,if you wanna remove it use sudo apt-get autoremove eclipse)

2. sudo apt-get install sun-java5-jre sun-java5-plugin sun-java5-bin sun-java5-fonts(java run time enviroment files)

3. sudo update-alternatives --config java(update the JDK) /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/jre/bin/java (select this line number in console)
4. gksudo gedit /etc/eclipse/java_home(make sunJDK first line which means first JDK lookup)
5. gedit ~/.eclipse/eclipserc and add this line JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/

If you have problem while updating eclipse thats probably cause of openJDK or the server you use to update.Change JDK or server.

Switching To Debian

As you notice in the headline i am switching my linux distro to Debian.I am currently about 2 year Ubuntu user.Ubuntu is a best solution for who is new to linux OS.It is easy to use , has good GUI for the end user ,and best part is it is a debian based distro(means it uses wide variety of debian packages) and also uses my favorite desktop enviroment Gnome.But there is a problem for who wants to use Ubuntu for long time ,it is not so stable comparing to the Debian.And after sometime it become kind of annoying dealing with Ubuntu.For novice user it is not a good choice to continue with Ubuntu , it is better to switch a distro which is more stable , and when word “stable” come to mind one of the best known stable distro is Debian.And Debian is a base of most of the big software companies and web sites like Google,Slashdot.Now i am formatting Ubuntu see you with new post from Debian…For who wants to download Debian follow this link and here is the release notes of latest version.

Gnome Console Modification

I am nearly 4 year linux user  and i try to do most of my job in console of the linux.I am ubuntu user by the way.Using default console sometimes is useless if you are a vi man or want to do multiple tasks at the same time .For example you have to look at code snippet while you are coding too.You can add new tab to your console window but in my opinion it is a waste of time.

Yakuake

I also used some quake style terminals yakuake (kde),guake-terminal(gnome),and tilda(gnome).Yakuake is useless sometimes in gnome enviorement but guake and tilda are very useful.While you are reading something you can also type console line.For installing yakuake and tild use codes below.

Tilda

• sudo apt-get install yakuake
• sudo apt-get install tilda

My point is not these you can modify your console with Terminator which is a program can divide your console vertically or horizontally .Believe me or not it is very useful while you are coding.You can look at someone’s code while you are using vi or you can download update your packages at the same time .Good part is all of them is in the same window.

• sudo apt-get install terminator

How to Install Skype On Ubuntu 8.10

Skype is a software application that allows users to make telephone calls over the Internet. Calls to other users of the service and to free-of-charge numbers are free, while calls to other landlines and mobile phones can be made for a fee.As other known products it has a linux version too.How to install skype is simple on Ubuntu and also other linux distros.

1. Go this site and download debian package
2. Execute debian package(easy just double click and allow to download packages)
3. Then it download and install all needed packages
4. There you go your skype linux version is ready.
5. Just open a new account or use existing one

How to Install Amarok 2.0.1.1 on Ubuntu 8.10

Öncelikle yapılması gereken paket deposunu eklemek normalde amarok bir kde yazılımı olduğu için gnome altında kde deki kadar stabil çalışmayabiliyor.(en azından benim gibi gnome kullanan biri için öyle).Ama mükemmele yakın özellikleri olduğu için hiç önemli değil bu.

Şunu yapıyoruz Sistem(System)->Yönetim(Administration)->Yazılım Kaynakları(Software Resources) daha sonra Third-Party applications yani üçüncü parti yazılımlara şu paketi ekliyoruz.

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu intrepid main

Sonrasında konsolu açarak şu command’i girin.

sudo apt-get install update && sudo apt-get install amarok-kde4

Böylece gerekli olan herşey paket deposundan yüklenip kurulacaktır.Ve işte bu kadar amarok 2 kullanıma hazır bu arada belirtmeden geçemiyeceğim mükemmel olmuş.

Ubuntu 8.10′da Opera Yükleme

Bundan bir süre önce kontrol ettiğimde opera sitesinde yeni sürüm olan Ubuntu 8.10 ile ilgili herhangi bir sürüm yoktu.Ama en son kontrol edişimde en güncel sürüm için bir .deb paketi yayınladıklarını gördüm.Genelde Firefox kullansamda bazı durumlarda Operaya da ihtiyaç olabiliyor.Ubuntu 8.10 da Opera yüklemek için yapmanız gerekenler şöyle(synaptic paketlerin arasında yok o yüzden .deb paketi olarak indireceğiz)

1. Buradan sürüme göre indirin.
2. Daha sonra .deb paketi üzerine çift tıklayın
3. Kendi halledecektir herşeyi sadece izinverin ekstra paketleride kendi halledecektir.
4. Ve kullanmaya başlayın(Genelde menude internet sekmesi altındadır.)
